Rafael Leao is set to disappoint a number of Premier League clubs by signing a new contract with AC Milan.

  • Rafael Leao set to sign new contract
  • Deal expected to be finalised soon
  • Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain show interest

What is the news?

Leao is in excellent form for Milan for a second season in a row and the Portuguese striker is on the short list of many clubs, particularly some clubs in the Premier League. However, Leao would not pursue a departure from the Serie A club this summer and according to transfer expert Gianluca di Marzio the striker is on the verge of signing a new multi-year contract.

What did Di Marzio say?

Asked on the Leao transfer situation, the Italian told Sky Sports: “I think Rafa Leao will renew the contract with AC Milan in the next few days. Thursday or Friday could be the right day for the formal signature. He has one year more on his contract, but he will renew for four more years because he wants to stay in Milan and he is happy there even if he has a lot of offers, for instance Chelsea last year. The transfer market can wait for Rafa Leao.”

The backstory

The 23-year-old Portugal international joined Milan in 2019 from French side OSC Lille and after a couple slow starting seasons, the forward enjoyed his breakout season last year in Milan’s title winning season. This year Leao continued his good form and managed to score 13 goals and assists in all competitions. The striker has been linked with moves to Chelsea, Newcastle United and Manchester United in the past, with French giants Paris Saint-Germain also monitoring the situation.
