Jurrien Timber was part of the Netherlands squad that featured at the 2022 World Cup. After missing out on the first game, Timber entered the team for their second match and then went on to feature in their run to the quarter final against Argentina. That game ended in a 2-2 draw, with Argentina then progressing towards the semi-final after penalties. During the game, Timber was one of the defenders that had the task to keep Messi under control and now he has admitted that Messi was the most difficult opponent he has ever faced.

What did Timber say about Messi?

During an interview with Ziggo Sport, Timber said: “Facing Messi in the World Cup? Messi is scary. He receives a bad pass, so you decide to jump to try to take it away from him, put him under pressure immediately, but he’s able to kill a bad pass with one touch. In a split second, the ball is under his foot in his total control. It’s unbelievable.”

The 21-year-old Ajax star is looking to be one of the next young Dutch talents to earn himself a move to a top flight in Europe. After two seasons as a starter at Ajax, Timber has already admitted he would like to make a transfer this summer. Many reports have linked Timber to join Manchester United, where he could be joining his former boss Erik ten Hag and his former defensive partner Lisandro Martinez.
