Arsenal has approached PSV to discuss a transfer for star striker Xavi Simons.
- Arsenal want Xavi Simons
- PSV want to keep forward
- PSG have 12m buy-back clause
What’s the news?
According to Eindhovens Dagblad and Voetbal International, Arsenal has expressed interest in Xavi Simons to PSV. It is currently unknown whether the Premier League club will officially make an offer in the short term, although suggestions have been made that the English club would like to finalize a potential transfer quickly.
The backstory
Simons signed a multi-year contract with PSV last summer after spending several seasons in the youth academy of Paris Saint-Germain and making his debut for the first team. In Eindhoven, Simons rapidly developed into one of the standout players in the Eredivisie and earned his debut for the Dutch national team. He won the Johan Cruyff Shield and the KNVB Cup with PSV.
What’s more?
PSV is eager to keep Simons at the club and is currently working on offering the striker a new contract. His current contract includes a clause that allows PSG to bring him back to Paris for €12 million. PSV wants to remove the clause and extend Simons’ stay. However, this could prove challenging now that Arsenal has reportedly made contact with the club.
What’s next?
Simons will have to decide whether he wants to make a move to Arsenal and the Premier League. Recently, the striker expressed that he is not done learning at PSV and is focused on the upcoming season in Eindhoven. However, Simons did mention his desire to play in the UEFA Champions League. If PSV qualifies for the group stage in August, he could achieve that goal with the club. If not, Simons can still consider a move to another club.
