Atletico Madrid have almost completed their first new signing for the coming season, Fabrizio Romano confirms on Twitter. The club from Madrid will soon announce an agreement with Caglar Soyuncu, currently playing for Leicester City. The Turkish defender will transfer to Atletico on a free transfer and will sign a multi-year contract.
The 26-year-old already agreed to join Atletico back in January. But the deal, which will see him move to Madrid in July, has only just been completed. Caglar signed for Leicester five years ago in a transfer from SC Freiburg for around €20 million. The Foxes have tried to extend the defender’s expiring contract, but he was determined to leave the club after this season.
Leicester signed Caglar after they sold Harry Maguire to Manchester United in 2019 and much was expected. While he had a good start to his career in England, his performance has declined in recent years. This season he has been sitting mainly on the bench at Leicester, but that was due to his choice not to sign a new contract. Since Dean Smith took over from Brendan Rodgers, Soyuncu has made three straight league starts.
