FC Barcelona director of football Mateu Alemany will be leaving the club this summer after spending several years in the role.
What’s the news?
Barcelona have confirmed that Alemany has informed the club and president Joan Laporta that he wants to leave the club after this season to take on a new challenge in his career. Fabrizio Romano has reported that the director could be on his way to Aston Villa, as the Premier League club have already made an offer to the Spaniard.
Who is Alemany?
He took the role of director of football under Laporta and he has often been described as ‘a killer’. Alemany was instructed with the task to make major cuts to the first team in an attempt to register new signings for the first team. Under Alemany Barcelona nearly saved 300 million euros on wages and further cuts are expected.
What will Barcelona do?
The club have already announced that they are currently looking at the structure of the executive positions at the club. It is expected that Barcelona will be looking for a new director of football and could be announcing their plans once Alemany leaves. Reports have claimed that Antonio Cordon, who previously worked at Real Betis, is set to take the role this summer.
