FC Barcelona are heavily interested in signing Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina, various reports from Spain have claimed.
What is the news?
FC Barcelona are looking for a replacement for Sergio Busquets, who will be leaving the club on a free transfer this summer. The Catalans are in the market for a replacement and the club has already made a shortlist with potential candidates. One of their top targets is Moroccan international Amrabat, who enjoyed a stellar World Cup for his country as he helped them earn fourth place in the tournament.
The backstory
It is not the first time Amrabat has been linked with a move to Barcelona. The Spanish club had interest in January, but wasn’t able to comply with Fiorentina’s demands. This summer the Italians would be prepared to negotiate a deal to aid their financial status, but they would not accept any offers under 25 million euros. Looking at Barcelona’s financial situation, that could already be too much for the Spaniards.
What next for Amrabat?
The former Feyenoord midfielder has a contract until the summer of 2024 but Fiorentina has the option to extend it with an extra year. Meaning Fiorentina are in control and are able to demand a big transfer fee. La Viola are currently in eighth position on the table and are looking to miss out on European football next season.
