What is the news?
Graham Potter is heavily linked with a return to the Premier League next season. The 48-year-old is considered to be the leading candidate at Crystal Palace after veteran coach Roy Hodgson confirmed he would be stepping down from his role as caretaker manager and will return to his retirement. The 75-year-old Hodgson managed to save Palace from relegation in the Premier League and the Eagles are now looking to appoint a new manager on a permanent deal.
The backstory
Potter has been without a club ever since he was sacked by Chelsea in March following a bad run of results. In the meantime, the English coach has been negotiating terms with the London club over the termination of his long-term contract and it now seems he is looking to for a swift return to football management. According to the report, Potter has been strongly linked with Crystal Palace and also Ligue 1 club OGC Nice.
What next?
Potter will have to finalize negotiations with Chelsea over the buyout of his contract in the coming weeks before he can sign for a new club. It is expected that Chelsea want to get rid of the Englishman quickly and will meet him with a hefty transfer fee. Then the question is whether Potter wants to stay in the Premier League or whether he can be persuaded by the English owners of INEOS, who also own Nice. Potter has worked outside England in the past, he was the trainer of the Swedish Ostersunds for several years.
