NewsPremier League giants ready to battle for France international

Chelsea and Liverpool are ready to battle it out for the signature of AS Monaco’s young midfielder Youssouf Fofana in the summer, reports the Daily Mail.

  • Fofana has been one of Monaco’s top performers this season
  • His contract expires in the summer of 2024
  • Liverpool and Chelsea could sign Fofana for less than 30 million

What is the news?

Both Chelsea and Liverpool are looking to change the look of their midfield next season and Fofana is a player that has been on their shortlists. According to the Daily Mail, both Premier League giants are making serious plans to bid for Fofana during the summer and they might be getting their man for a fair price. The midfielders contract will run out at the end of next season, meaning his club AS Monaco can’t demand a hefty transfer fee. It has been suggested that Monaco would be prepared to sell Fofana for a fee around 30 million euros.

The backstory

Fofana joined Monaco in 2020 from Strasbourg and since joining he has helped the club achieve a top four finish every season. Last year he had a striking partnership with Aurelien Tchouameni, who later on joined Real Madrid for at least 80 million euros. Fofana is a defensive minded midfielder, who is known for his consistency and physique. With a contract that runs down next season, the nine time France international could be on his way to the Premier League this summer.

What will happen next?

Monaco’s Ligue 1 finish this season will be very important for Fofana’s future decision. The midfielder has told reporters earlier that qualification for the Champions League is an absolute must for him to stay on for at least another season. Monaco currently sit in fourth on the table and have a five point gap to the Champions League qualifying spot.
