Real Madrid star Marco Asensio is set to complete a move to the Premier League next season, reports Caught Offside.
- Asensio expected to leave Real Madrid
- Aston Villa interested in signing the midfielder
- Announcement expected after the season has finished
What is the news?
Marco Asensio will be out of contract this summer as his contract with Real Madrid is set to expire and talks over a new contract have not resulted in an agreement. Asensio is therefore becoming a free agent and has his future in his own hands. There are now reports linking Asensio to joining Premier League club Aston Villa, who are determined to storm the top teams in the English leagues over the next few seasons.
The backstory
Aston Villa are ambitious and are planning to attack the top teams in the Premier League in the next years to come. The Villans did appoint Unai Emery this year and the Spaniard has worked admirably at the club, taking them into the top 10 of the league after a dreadful start to the season under Steven Gerrard. Asensio could be one of the first new big name signings, with Villa also being linked with Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic and FC Barcelona forward Ferran Torres.
What next?
The announcement of Asensio leaving Madrid will be expected after the current season. The Spanish club has five games to play in LaLiga and will also hope to reach the final of the Champions League next week when they face Manchester City in the second leg of the semi-final (1-1). Asensio joined Madrid in the summer of 2016 and has played 281 games for the club. However, the Spanish midfielder never managed to hold on to a regular starting position and his been switching from the starting eleven to the bench much more often than he himself would have liked
