Bayern Munich should have never sacked Julian Nagelsmann and replace him with Thomas Tuchel, says club icon Lothar Matthaus.
- Nagelsmann sacked in March
- Bayern kicked out of CL and DFB Pokal
- Bundesliga title in hands of Dortmund
What is the news?
Former World Champion and Bundesliga icon Lothar Matthaus says he is unimpressed with the performances of Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich. Since the former Chelsea manager took over from Julian Nagelsmann in March, Bayern were knocked out of the Champions League and DFB-Pokal, whilst they lost the lead in the Bundesliga to rivals Borussia Dortmund. With one league match to go, Bayern trail by two points and could miss out on the league title for the first time in ten years.
What did Matthaus say?
“Of course, many mistakes were made even before the change of coach, which ultimately led to this situation. But the team, which were still on course to win the treble under Nagelsmann, are playing worse under Tuchel,” Bayern and Germany legend Matthaus said to Bild.
“The squad is individually so strong that you have to at least become a champion with them, but the team don’t work because everyone is busy with themselves. Tuchel increased the uncertainty because at his press conferences, which I find a bit strange, he always talks about how difficult everything is and what doesn’t work, instead of standing up for the team.”
The backstory
Tuchel’s performances at Bayern since taking control have been far from impressive. Bayern have only won five of the 11 games they played under Tuchel and they now fear to end the season without any silverware. The terrible results and mediocre performances under Tuchel have now even sparked rumours that Bayern are considering to sack Tuchel once the season has ended.
What next?
Bayern will play 10th placed FC Koln on Saturday in their final Bundesliga game of the season. Meanwhile, Dortmund will hist 9th place FSV Mainz. A win for them will earn them the title in the Bundesliga.
