NewsWout Weghorst remains uncertain of Manchester United future

Wout Weghorst isn’t sure about his future at Manchester United at the moment, as nobody at the club confirming to him that a permanent stay has been ruled out.

  • Weghorst would love to stay at Man United
  • Club hasn’t told striker about their plans
  • United look to sign new striker in the summer

What is the news?

Weghorst is playing on loan for Man United since January and the views on his spell at Old Trafford are quite mixed. The forward has only scored two goals in 27 appearances and that has earned himself some criticism from one side of the fans. However, manager Erik ten Hag has been very positive about Weghorst’s impact on United’s and it might be possible that the forward will continue his career at United beyond this season. Weghorst himself also suggested that he may still sign on a permanent transfer next season.

What did Weghorst say?

Weghorst was quizzed on his future by The Times: “In those [talks] the club said they are very satisfied with me. It has absolutely not been communicated with me that Man United don’t want to continue with me. They appreciate my value. They believe I am absolutely an asset for the team. Of course I have heard different things [in the media]. I have to wait and see what happens and focus on our goals in the league and cup competitions.”

The backstory

Weghorst started the season on loan at Turkish club Besiktas from Burnley but was brought back to the Premier League in January. At Old Trafford the striker managed to aid the team in their triumphant Carabao Cup campaign, while United are also through to the final of the FA Cup. Lately, Ten Hag has been putting Weghorst on the bench and that isn’t making the striker happy: “I’m a guy who likes to play football. When your appearances are reduced, as has been the case lately, you realise what you are missing. If the club wants to keep me, I’ll have to know what role they have in mind for me.”

What next?

It could very well happen that United decide to sign Weghorst on a permanent deal, but that will also depend on Burnley’s plans with the forward. The Clarets have regained promotion to the Premier League and they might want to use Weghorst next season to avoid the drop back into the Championship. Meanwhile, United have made a new number one striker their top transfer priority for the summer.
