What is the news?
Barca boss Xavi has admitted he has been talking with Leo Messi on a potential return to the club next season. The Spanish boss talked to reporters after Barcelona played their final home game of the 2023-24 season. Barcelona have been long-linked with Messi and Xavi has now acknowledged that a return of the forward could be possible.
What did Xavi say?
Asked about the Messi rumours, Xavi said: “Yes, I’m talking to him. Here, Leo has the doors open. If he wants to come, I have no doubts as a coach, none. I think he would bring a lot for us. Perhaps, he has lost his explosiveness, but we also saw Messi was extraordinary in the World Cup. In the end, I think he still has years ahead of him, at a high level. Today, there are not any doubts that he would help us.”
What will happen next?
With talks between Messi and Barcelona ongoing, it may be possible that an agreement is close. However, if Barcelona wants to complete the signing of the Argentinian and register him for next season’s LaLiga, the club will need to save at least 200 million euros on wages. Messi’s contract at Paris Saint-Germain is set to expire next month and the longer Barcelona wait, the bigger the chances will be that Messi will not return and sign for a different club.
